HOME SAFETY FOR KIDS

Home Safety for Kids…Today’s World

Today it’s a very different world than it was 50 years ago.

http://bit.ly/eHNozp

We have come a long way since then with the elimination of traditional infectious diseases, infant mortality is greatly reduced, and babies born in the U.S. today are expected to live more than 20 years longer than those born in the early 1900s.

But on the down side, kids today face a whole new set of health dangers.  They are continually in contact with thousands of new synthetic chemicals.

Since World War II at least 80,000 chemical compounds have been invented and put into the environment.  Only a fraction of these have been tested for their toxic effects in people.  Studies of toxic effects in children are even fewer.

Safety in the Home…Chronic Diseases

Toxic chemicals can be found in our soil, water, air and in our bodies.  This exposure has seriously affected humans and wildlife throughout the world.

Results of studies on toxins in our homes, in schools, the air we breathe and the products we use daily,  have associated these toxins as causes of disease.

While the old infectious diseases like polio and smallpox are now gone for the most part, they’ve been replaced by chronic diseases such as:  asthma , learning disabilities, allergies, obesity, autism, type II diabetes and leukemia.

  • “Asthma rates have more than doubled in the past three decades. Asthma is now the leading cause of emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and school absenteeism.
  • One of every six American children has a developmental disorder such as ADHD, dyslexia, and mental retardation.
  • One in every 150 American children is now diagnosed with autism.
  • Primary brain cancer increased by nearly 40% and leukemia increased by over 60% among children 14 years and younger from 1975 to 2004
  • Childhood obesity has quadrupled in the past ten years.
  • Type 2 diabetes, previously unknown among children, is becoming epidemic.”           -Mt. Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center

Safety in the Home…Toxins in Your Home

When babies are growing they put everything into their mouths.  So when they crawl and play on the floor (which could be full of toxins) – they are much more at risk to the harmful effects of chemical pollutants than adults.

Chemicals play a major role in our every day lives. They are part of what we eat, where we work, and how we live.

In spite of  their prevalence in our lives, many chemicals are hazardous, or toxic.

Toxic chemicals can be found in our soil, water, air, and bodies. This contamination has seriously affected the health of humans and wildlife everywhere.

Our buildings – including schools, residential areas, and places of work, can all be sites of hazardous chemical contamination.

So, many toxic chemicals can be found right in your home!

  • Household products such as detergents, floor and furniture polish, paints, and various cleaning products for glass, wood, metal, ovens, toilets, and drains may contain hazardous chemicals.

They include ammonia, sulfuric and phosphoric acids, lye, chlorine, formaldehyde, and phenol.

  • Air fresheners can also contain chemicals that are harmful to health.
  • Art supplies, such as markers, paint, and glue, may also contain toxic materials. When not properly handled, these products can make the home environment a dangerous place, especially for kids.
  • Home furnishings, such as carpets, curtains, wall decorations, and some furniture, may be treated with chemicals and are potentially dangerous.
It is important to note that a few days after installation, new carpets emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are chemicals associated with carpet manufacturing that can be harmful to humans and the environment.
  • Gas and wood stoves and kerosene heaters may also release dangerous chemicals.
  • Building materials such as particle board, insulation, asbestos, and treated wood (used for decks and outdoor furniture), can also pose health threats.
Some play sets and toys, as well as outdoor swing sets and play grounds, may also be treated with toxic chemicals, made from toxic plastics, or include hazardous materials.
The more time that children spend playing in such an environment, the higher their exposure to toxic chemicals, and the greater a risk to their health.

Various health effects can result from toxic chemical exposure, including allergic reactions, asthma, migraines, dizziness, nausea, eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation, various forms of cancer, and even death.

The health effects resulting from exposure depends upon many factors, including how toxic the chemical is and the degree of exposure.  -Children’s Environmental Health Network

So there are many factors contributing to indoor air pollution in the home.

Not only are household cleaners at fault, but so are home furnishings and building materials.

These items affect indoor air quality because they release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air.  These VOCs pollute indoor air so thoroughly that the air in our indoor buildings is about two to five times more polluted than outside air …  remember, kids spend up to 85% of their time indoors.

Safety in the Home…Health Boosting Tips

It’s fortunate that parents don’t have to choose between a clean home and healthy kids. To avoid breathing in toxic fumes, try the following:

  • Avoid products that say, “danger,” “caution,” or “flammable”

    Toxic Chemicals

  • Odors are bad! Avoid products with strong, long lasting odors as this means high chemical levels. This includes “natural” smells like pine or lemon (don’t let the commercials brainwash you)
  • Use water-based products that are odor-free and biodegradable
  • Use spray-on products instead of aerosol products
  • Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and buy microfiber dust cloths

In conclusion, there are many ways to improve the air quality in our homes to keep our children healthy and safe.  The home safety for kids tips listed above when followed, will go a long way in improving and maintaining your family’s health.

CHILDREN HOME SAFETY…DANGERS of HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS

CHILDRENS HOME SAFETY…HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT’S LURKING UNDER YOUR SINK?

Childrens Home Safety – How Many of  These  Household Cleaners

Do You Use in Your Home?

We all want to keep our kids as safe as possible because they are so precious to us. A major way to provide for your childrens home safety is  to have an environment for children that is as toxic–free as possible .

So, it’s necessary to take a look at our household cleaners:

Recent studies indicate dozens of toxic chemicals are showing up in the bloodstreams of American children.

Some can be traced to household cleaning products and others to pesticides and preservatives from non-organic food.

A Canadian study found that women who work at home have a 54% higher death rate from cancer than those who work away from home.  The study concluded that this was a direct result of the increased exposure to toxic chemicals, many that are found in common household cleaners.

Do you know that poisoning occurs very often in homes where parents are unaware that those cleaning products they use are toxic?

Isn’t that ironic…parents who are doing their best to give their kids a healthy, clean home could instead be poisoning them!

The most frequent calls to poison centers are from frightened parents whose kids have gotten into toxic household cleaners such as: carpet cleaners, chlorine bleach, degreasers, drain cleaners, glass cleaners, mold and mildew removers, oven cleaners, scouring cleansers, toilet bowl cleaners, and tub and tile cleaners.

As a result, problems affecting kids can range from cancer and even death, to damage of skin, mouth, eyes, throat, and more.  Internal organs can also be injured.

The government acknowledges that these household cleaners are hazardous, but regulation only requires that labels indicate if they are combustible, corrosive, poisonous, use caution, etc.

It seems to me that they could be doing a great deal more to alert an unsuspecting and uninformed public.

Think about it this way…babies crawl on the floors you’ve cleaned and then what do they generally do?Babies constantly crawl on floors to get around. Then they put their hands into their mouths...are your floors chemically cleaned? They put their hands into their mouths and all those toxins go right into their bloodstreams.  How about that danger!

Also, are you aware that allergies and asthma are at an all time high?  A major reason may be that most detergents and softeners also contain toxins.

Children lay all night in pajamas and sheets washed in these toxic products.  The chemicals are absorbed by the skin and enter the bloodstream  and work the same way the drugs in the nicotine patch or the estrogen patch do.

Okay, enough said…here are some helpful tips to turn this danger to kids’ health around…

CHILDRENS HOME SAFETY… GENERAL INFO FROM THE EPA -  An EPA publication lists 34 tips in 8 areas.  A few of them are listed below:

1. Help children breathe easier – Don’t smoke at home; keep the home clean (reduce dust, mold, pet dander,  etc.); avoid open burning

2. Protect children from lead poisoning - Have children tested for lead; wash children’s hands before they eat -  run the cold water for at least 30 seconds to flush lead from pipes – check older homes for lead in the paint

3. Keep pesticides and other toxic chemicals away from children – Read product labels and follow directions.

Store pesticides and chemicals in a safe place to protect your kids health.

Wash fruits and vegetables under running water before eating – peel them before eating when possible.

I would add that just washing produce under water has little effect. Use a natural household cleaner made for this purpose and rinse.

In a different document, the EPA recognizes the importance of organic fruit and vegetables – no pesticides.

4. Protect children from carbon monoxide poisoning - Check fuel burning appliances, furnace fumes, and chimneys annually; install CO alarms in sleeping areas

5. Protect children from contaminated fish and polluted water –

Be alert for local fish advisories and beach closings

Learn what’s in your drinking water – Think about getting a water purifier.

6. Safeguard children from high levels of radon – have your home tested.

7. Protect Children from too much sun – Wear hats, sunglasses, protective clothing; apply  SPF15+ sunscreen; keep infants out of direct sunlight

8. Keep children and mercury apart – Eat a balanced diet but avoid fish with high levels of mercury, such as tuna and swordfish…

Buy wild caught fish, not farm raised – that can contain bacteria.

Replace mercury thermometers with a digital thermometer

Setting even some of the above child home safety standards in your home will help keep your kids safe and well.

Childrens Home Safety…Today’s Health Boosting Tip:*

Did you know that real clean doesn’t smell like pine trees or bleach? In fact, it doesn’t smell like anything at all.

Really clean is odorless!

*Go find green household cleaners that work well, are cost saving because they are so concentrated, and are safe for you, your family and the environment.

Note: because they are so concentrated, you’ll be able to cut back on the amount of natural household cleaners you purchase.  So, go green and save money.  This  will at the same time, greatly help to reduce the vast number of pollution causing containers that go into landfills.

If you choose to follow even some of these suggestions about safety at home, it will be a win all around – for a healthier you, your family and our planet.

To keep your kids safe and protected from toxic household cleaners, switch to natural, green products.Know that each person can make a healthy difference – IT STARTS WITH YOU!

HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS are TOXIC: PROOF!

What good are cleaners if they’re dangerous to your family’s health?

HOW NOT TO POISON YOUR CHILDREN!

Here’s the dreaded secret that most parents don’t know…that almost all common household cleaners contain Toxic Chemicals!

Parents believe they’re protecting their kids  by keeping a clean home, but in reality they’re poisoning them…(See the video below for proof)

I promised you I was going to roll up my sleeves and get to work for you…but first I’m going to tell you a true story:

Sloan & Roger’s little boy Spencer started having acute asthma attacks at age three.  After being rushed to the ER several times, Sloan began investigating the cause.

She was told that there was no history of asthma in either of their families, so she knew the cause had to be environmental.

After much research, she found almost all household cleaners contain toxic chemicals-including those she was using.

So, she switched brands to a company whose products are green, safe, work great and are cost saving…and the results…Spencer has not had an asthma attack since…some 7 years later!

P.S. They loved the company so much, that Roger bought it!

***********************************************************************************

Seeing is believing…click on the video below to see first hand what’s in your cleaners that could be causing your children to have allergic reactionsof all sorts…

HOME FIRE SAFETY – TEACHING KIDS FIRE PROTECTION

Although kids may be scared to think about a fire breaking out in their home, it’s an excellent idea to discuss home fire safety with them.
If know what to do  they know what to do in advance, it may save their lives.

Have you taught your kids what to do in case of fire? The whole family should sit down together and talk about what to do to safely escape a fire that’s started at home.

Escape plans and escape routes are  important for each family member to know.  The goal is to get outside quickly and safely.

Because a fire’s smoke can make it hard to see, it’s important for all to learn all the different exits in their home, and how to get to them from their bedrooms.

  • To further teach kids about home fire safety, you must explain about not opening their bedroom doors if smoke or heat are present.
–Talk about escape from their windows and collapsible ladders, or having an adult present to help.
–Teach them how to unlock windows and remove screens, but stress this is only for emergencies.
  • Choose a meeting place in the yard or at a neighbor’s house.
  • Practice a fire drill twice a year.
  • Change batteries in smoke detectors yearly.
  • If caught in smoke-filled room, drop to the floor and crawl to exit so you don’t breathe in the unhealthy  smoke.
  • If clothes catch on fire, DON’T RUN!  Instead, stop, drop and roll out the flames.
  • If fire blocks the door, teach the child to yell from an open window or if available, use a phone to call 911.
  • Stress the importance of never to going back into a burning house for a pet or toy…instead tell a fireman about it.
  • Keep bedroom doors closed at night.
  • Keep a flashlight by the bed.
  • Never try to put out a fire by yourself, no matter how small it is.
  • Never play with matches or lighters.

******************************************************************************
Some parents may want to avoid the teaching the subject of home fire safety with their kids because they feel the children will be frightened.  My feelings are if you approach this topic gently and without fear, your kids will be armed with the knowledge that just may save their lives!

ELECTRICAL SAFETY in the HOME – TEACH YOUR KIDS

Is your home in good condition…how does electrical safety in the home rate at your house?

Did You Know?
Electricity related incidents in the home annually cause approximately:

  • 300 electrocutions
  • 12,000 shock and burn injuries
  • 150,000 fires…from NSC, CPSC, AND OSH

There are two kinds of home fire safety risks:

  1. Risk of electrical shock
  2. Risk of electrical faults causing fire

Make your kids aware of the various areas of possible electrical problems in the home.
Here are some tips you can follow:

  • Teach your kids to NEVER put fingers or objects into electrical outlets, toasters, or any other appliance EVEN IF IT’S TURNED OFF!Protect your kids from getting shocks or worse. Cover unused outlets with child safety outlet covers.
I neglected to do this and my son got shocked!

To avoid this danger, think about outlet covers

  • Keep appliances and cords away from kids, bathtubs and sinks.
  • Use outlet protectors on unused outlets.
  • Because electricity can travel down the strings on kites and balloons, have kids play with them only in open areas away from electrical wires, because they can cause shock or fire.
  • Teach children to recognize “Danger High Voltage” signs and stay away from power lines, sub-stations and pad-mounted transformers.
  • Don’t let kids climb trees near power lines.

To be sure that home builders have followed the best procedures with electrical installations, and that these are not later out of date, it would be a good idea to follow the practices of Asian countries.  There they run periodic inspections and give mandatory certificates to home owners.

In the U.S., certification of new developments are not enough because aging homes, or those built before 1973, don’t meet the current electrical demands of today’s world.

It is highly recommended to update or repair the electrical wiring in these older homes.
A few of the modern improvements to the electrical systems of homes are to:

  • Install contemporary circuit breakers that are made to automatically shut off when they detect a fire.Be sure to cover unused outlets with child protective outlet covers.
  • Consider tamper resistant outlets to protect small children from getting shocked or worse, electrocuted.
  • Indoor and outdoor wiring has specific building codes…make sure they are followed for maximum safety.

So by making some simple changes, and by teaching your kids about electrical safety in the home, you might be saving lives or in the very least, helping to prevent accidents and injuries.

HOME SAFETY SECURITY – MY KID GOT SHOCKED!

My kid got shocked…don’t let it happen to yours!

How secure are you about your child's home safety...have you childproofed your home?Talk about home safety and security…many years ago I walked in on my toddler sticking his finger into an electrical outlet (which scared me big time).

But never mind my reaction, he got shocked from it and started screaming.

Well, as you can guess, he never tried that again.

I am very grateful that by my carelessness of not installing
outlet covers
, a good scare was all he got…it could have been much worse!

So, to prevent your curious kids from having that same potentially dangerous experience, install plastic protectors (made for that purpose) into all your unused electrical outlets.

Home safety security should be important to everyone, whether you live in your own home or an apartment.  Knowing your home is protected gives peace of mind…one less thing for you to worry about.

To protect your family and home there are choices.  One way to go is an expensive alarm system, but know there are measures you can take that will make your home safer that won’t cost you a small fortune.  For example, organize a neighborhood watch.

Also, if someone in your family is almost always at home, you could be at less of a risk than for example, another person who lives alone and is often away on business.  Motion detector lights would be a help here to discourage intruders.

  • A wise thing to write down is an accident prevention and a fire safety plan.  These preventive measures can rule out a lot of heartache, expense, loss and stress.
  • Another home safety security measure to take for your little ones is to
install safety locks or latches on doors, cabinets and screens
  • Don’t forget safety gates to prevent them from tumbling down flights of stairs.
  • Install smoke alarms and a carbon monoxide detector.
  • Also, install window stops and window guards.
  • Place fireplace bumper pads around the hearth to avoid sharp corners
  • Place all emergency numbers by every phone. Include the
    Poison Control Center’s number: 1-800-222-1222.
  • Learn first aid and CPR.
  • Avoid using alcohol based germicides.  Firemen can point out those areas in your home sprayed with it.  It burns much faster and more thoroughly than those areas where it’s not been used.

In addition, potential dangers from toxic household cleaners to the whole family are: carpet cleaners, chlorine bleach, degreasers, drain cleaners, glass cleaners, mold and mildew removers, oven cleaners, scouring cleansers, toilet bowl cleaners, and tub and tile cleaners.

They range with harmful effects from causing cancer to causing harsh injuries to eyes, skin, mouth, stomach, liver, respiratory system and more.

Consider removing these types of products from your home and go green!

You will provide additional home safety security and as a result have greater peace of mind.

SAFETY in the HOME – KIDS and STRANGER DANGER

Many years ago when I was growing up, safety in the home was entirely different than it is today.   We felt perfectly safe, almost never locked our doors, and  parents rarely if ever thought about their kids and stranger danger.

I remember as a teen, I went to a club meeting once a week and walked quite a long distance to get home…in the dark.  My mother would meet me at the half way point to keep me company the rest of the way home.

Now with so much violence and crime shown repeatedly and graphically on TV and in print,  it’s horrible.  Safety measures must be taught to kids for their protection against abuse, violence, abduction and stranger danger.

Parents, here’s a list of quite a few measures you can teach your kids to prevent stranger danger:

  • First, it’s important to teach them stranger safety rather than stranger danger because it will help keep them from feeling anxious.
  • It’s necessary for kids to realize that strangers don’t look like the bad guys on TV – they look like ordinary people.
  • When coming home to an empty house after school, first thing to do is lock all the doors.
  • Tell them to never open the door to a stranger.
  • Teach your child how to dial “911″ -  it could save a life.
  • When alone at home and answering the phone, never say “My parents aren’t home.”  Instead have them say, “My parents can’t come to the phone right now.”  Then have them get the caller’s name and phone number.
  • As a family make up a secret code word meaningful to your family in case a friend has to pick the child up in an emergency situation.
  • Tell them if someone wants them to go with them in a car, even if they tell your child it’s a family emergency, have your child ask them for the code word.  Even if it’s a family friend, they’re not to go with them without the code.
  • Have the kids tell the stranger he/she has to ask their parents first before doing what the stranger wants.  Then have them get away quickly and tell you
  • Do not go near a car when a stranger calls for help, or wants to give them something like candy, or show them something like a puppy.  Keep walking and tell an adult.
  • Teach them to learn the license plate number and tell you immediately.  Always take such reports from your kids seriously, and report them to the police.
  • If on foot, have your child run, yell and find an adult he/she can trust.
  • It’s safer to stay in a group rather than walk alone.
  • Teach your child that if he/she feels scared or uncomfortable, follow their gut feelings, say NO and get away.  Tell an adult ASAP.
  • Have them be aware if a stranger asks for help or wants them to keep a secret.
  • For your child’s safety, install parental controls on your computers to protect them from dangerous predators.
  • Warn children about the dangers of becoming friends with unknown strangers on the internet.

With all the news reports of graphic crime and home invasions that we hear of and see today, safety in the home is of prime importance and we must make our kids knowledgeable about stranger danger to keep them as safe as possible.  Awareness is the first defense for their protection.

SAFETY AT HOME – ARE YOUR KIDS REALLY SAFE?

Do you ever wonder if your kids are really safe at home…is there more that you can do to protect them?

In my previous Safety at Home posts, I have listed many potential dangers that you as parents can remove from your home to prevent accidents before they happen.

This post will deal with a variety of additional possible dangers to the health and safety of your kids…read below to more fully discover kids safety tips you may not have thought of.

  • If you have a  fireplace,  space heater, etc. put barriers around it to prevent your kids from being burned.
  • Have syrup of Ipecac handy for accidental poisonings, but be sure to call your physician or poison control center before using it.
  • Be sure that plastic bags, broken toy pieces, screws and other potential choking
hazards are thrown away or put in an area children can’t get to.
  • Have all indoor and outdoor stairways and entrances well lit and not obstructed.
  • Be sure all bathrooms and bedrooms can be unlocked from the outside.
  • Keep matches and lighters away from children’s reach.
  • Keep at least two exits clear in case of fire or other emergency.
  • Check all electrical cords for cracks and fraying.
  • Be sure that all outlets and extension cords are not overloaded.
  • It is best not to use space heaters.  If they are used, make sure they are in safe condition.
Never plug them into an extension cord.
Do not place them near drapes or furnishings.
  • Do not use the stove/oven as a heater.
  • Wallpaper and paint should not be chipping or peeling.
  • Keep purses, backpacks, etc. out of children’s reach or in a locked box because they may contain medicines, hard candies or other items that can harm kids.
  • It is always wise to call for help whenever you’re uncomfortable with a medical situation.

For Emergencies, Call 911

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY: KIDS

This post is about environmental health and safety in the home and how kids are being affected.

There are so many wonderful things to be grateful for in today’s world, and most parents would agree that their children would be at the top of the list.  They do everything they can to see to their kids’ health and welfare.

Keeping the house clean is a major factor in adding to children’s health and wellness, but many parents don’t realize the products they use to clean with can actually be making their kids sick.

Safety in the home…A True Story

Roger and Sloan were terrified when their little boy started having acute asthma attacks. They rushed him to the hospital numerous times where fortunately, the physicians were able to save him.

Sloan, an investigative reporter,  set to work to find the reason for her son’s asthma.  She asked both sets of grandparents if there were any known cases of asthma in their family’s previous generations. The answers were, “none at all.”

She figured, if his illness wasn’t congenital, it must be environmental, and started a search to find the cause.

What she found to her dismay, was that her cleaning products were the culprits.  Who would have thought that keeping a home “clean” could cause so much illness and stress?

Then she discovered that almost all household cleaners contain toxic chemicals, including the ones she was using!

So now that Sloan found the problem she searched for the solution.

She discovered that  safe, green cleaners were the answer…researched many “green” companies and chose one whose products are chemical-free and are healthy for families and the environment, are effective and economical.

After immediately replacing all her old cleaners with the green ones, their son has not had another asthma attack to date…some seven + years later.

P.S. They loved the products so much that Roger bought the company!

P.P.S.  Sloan did a presentation of the cleaners for the White House staff and the Blair House staff (the Vice-Presidents’ residence.)

President Obama’s daughter Malia has asthma and the first family was delighted to find help for her.

So now both of these homes are cleaned with Roger’s company’s products.

By the way, Oprah loves them too!
