Home Safety Products: Kids…SO, DO THESE CLEANERS REALLY WORK?

Hi…This post is all about home safety products that help protect kids health.

Here’s what happened to me-check it out, then you decide if these cleaners
are effective:

Today I’m going to tell you a true story that happened to me a long time ago…
it’s been more than 29 years that I started my journey to help parents
raise
healthier kids.

On one of those early days, I was practicing a cleaning demo in
my brand new home so that I would feel confident presenting  it
to a  group of parents.

As I was holding a bottle of iodine (you know how that stains) in
the just-built white bathroom to do a demo that shows how the whitening laundry product I use does so well with removing stains…

Did you guess…I dropped the iodine – it hit the sink and promptly
spilled everywhere!

All over the white patterned vinyl wallpaper, white ceramic tile, grout…
dark brown was splattered all over my new white bathroom  :(

Fortunately, my office was the room on the other side of the wall, so after
I got over the shock, I ran, got all my home safety products together and went to work.

When I got done…(in short order,) I looked around and was thrilled
to see every single spot and stain was gone – all but 1/8th inch
of grout that I got to cleaning last (I should have done it first
before it had a chance to absorb).

I was so excited I called my upline and told him, “Mike, my home
safety products work, they really work!”

The bathroom looked brand new again and was I ever a happy camper!

So what do you think about my tale of woe that ended on a very happy note?

Be well,
Sarah

HOME SAFETY TIPS: Kids…GREEN TIPS

Here are some home safety tips for kids, and they’re green tips!

While reading through Sloan’s informative book, Green Goes With Everything,
I came across this info that I thought would be helpful to you…so here it is:

1. Gather all of your cleaning products and read the labels.

2. Notice how dangerous and toxic they are. Then, take a deep
breath (but not near the cleaning products). To protect your kids, get rid of any household cleaner that says, "Poison" or "Danger" and replace with safe, green cleaner.

3. Take all the ones that say “Danger,” “Poison,” or contain
chlorine bleach and ammonia and put them in a garbage bag.

4. Call your local sanitation department and ask them how to
dispose of them safely.

5. Buy green cleaning products and breathe deeply and safely.”

I highly recommend “Green Goes With Everything:  Simple Steps To
A Healthier Life And A Cleaner Planet” by Sloan Barnett.

She writes in an easy to read, personalized style and has done a
very thorough job which will help all to raise healthier kids, pets,
and live on a cleaner planet.  Her book is filled with kids’ home safety tips.

It’s so important and easy to make your home a healthier environment for your family…all you have to do is switch brands from the toxic cleaners you now use to green ones.

CHILDHOOD ASTHMA

I have decided to write about childhood asthma because it has now grown to epidemic proportions…

Health Alert: Unhealthy US Children. Asthma is the most common chronic disorder among children affecting  9.9 million kids under 18. 9.3% of kids have asthma.
-National Health Interview Survey Data, 2006

It is the leading serious chronic illness in American kids and is one of the most common causes of school children being absent.  It’s  the third leading cause of hospitalization among children under the age of 15.”
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

WHAT IS CHILDHOOD ASTHMA?

Childhood asthma is a common lung condition in our polluted world that limits the ability to breathe and take in oxygen… our most basic survival need.

The emotions of fear and panic can take over when asthma is present, because we can’t live without air for more than a few minutes.
So it’s easy to understand why childhood asthma is one of the most frightening diseases -  physically and emotionally -  to both children and their parents.

The most important aspect of children’s asthma is the narrowing of the both the trachea (windpipe) and bronchial passages.

In childhood asthma, the airways  overreact so things that may not cause breathing problems for most of us, will cause the airways to constrict in asthmatics.

When the airways are narrowed as a result of children’s asthma, the delicate membrane linings become swollen and inflamed, making it difficult and painful to breathe.

CAUSES OF CHILDHOOD ASTHMA

Childhood asthma may be caused by irritants from the environment like pollen, dust or even cold air.  Or it could be from other asthma triggers such as  infections, exposure to irritants (allergies – chemical & physical),  and  exercise.  Whatever the trigger,  in asthma and childhood cases, the airways become extremely irritated and overreact by going into spasm.

More than 50% of current asthma cases in the U.S. can be attributed to allergies. Allergies are an indication that the immune system is not functioning well. 30% of these are associated with cat allergies. -Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology

Another cause of childhood asthma is secondhand smoke exposure – a risk factor for new asthma cases.

Recent studies have suggested that in the children of smokers as well as kids born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy, that they have abnormally narrowed airways which may cause asthma and other respiratory disorders. -American Lung Association

Almost two-thirds of all people with asthma, experience their first symptoms – wheezing,  shortness of breath, coughing, difficulty breathing and rapid heartbeat – by age five. -American Thoracic Society

This list does not mean that asthma is present.  Please see your health care professional for more information.

Children with wheezing, coughing, and trouble breathing at the same time should seek medical attention to rule out asthma, especially children who have had an upper respiratory infection.

Also, a child who has frequent coughing, pneumonia or bronchitis should be evaluated for asthma.

REMEMBER, ASTHMA IS:

  • An inflammatory condition of the airways caused by allergens, irritants and respiratory infections.
  • Triggered by many different stimuli (asthma triggers) that activate an over-reactive airway system.
  • Reversible and controllable (with only rare exceptions)

ASTHMA AND CHILDHOOD – HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

There is gathering evidence that exposures early in life, including in the womb, to household chemicals may influence the development of children’s asthma. This large study provides some evidence that increasing exposure to household chemicals during pregnancy may be linked to an increased risk of  children wheezing.
-Dr. Matt Hallsworth, Asthma UK

Researchers said, while their study suggested a link between prenatal exposure and wheezing, exposure after birth could also be a factor.  Toddlers  exposed to fumes from solvents and cleaning products at home are also at high risk.  Wheezing can be a sign a child will go on to develop asthma.

Detergents are found to be responsible for more household poisonings than any other substance. Many cause dermatitis, flu-like and asthmatic-like conditions, and severe eye damage.

“Cleaning compounds are generally just tested to make sure that they don’t kill people or cause cancer.  But, these products may not be safe for asthmatics to breathe in.  And,  if it’s not safe for asthmatics, it’s probably not safe for anyone else.”
-Dr. David Rosenstreich, director of the Division of Allergy and Immunology in the Department of Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of  Medicine in NYC.

For the health of your family, I strongly suggest you get rid of your household chemicals and find  green cleaners that are safe, effective and economical.   So many parents have helped their children’s asthma simply by getting rid of the toxic cleaners from under the sinks in their homes.

CHILDHOOD ASTHMA TREATMENT

There are different approaches when dealing with childhood asthma treatment.

The majority of medical practitioners will only tell  you about the available drugs,  not alternative approaches when treating asthma.
They have been taught to diagnose and then prescribe drugs, not to offer prevention advice.

Prescription asthma inhalers such as the drug Albuterol or steroids are the most common treatment.
When overused, these drugs can cause glaucoma, bone loss, strokes and they can become addictive.

“Traditional drugs used in treating asthma are often very toxic, addictive and sadly ineffective.
Drugs used for asthma don’t cure the disease; they simply stop the symptoms.”
-Dr. Andrew Weil - Natural Health, Natural Medicine

Control of asthma begins by learning which asthma triggers  are key to your child.  This is done through an individualized thorough evaluation through your health care provider.

The natural, alternative childhood asthma treatment lies in strengthening the body and the lung tissue so that asthma attacks decrease in frequency and in severity.

To reduce children’s asthma, remove from your child’s diet any foods the child may be allergic to.

Then to strengthen both the immune system and the lung tissue,  try getting results from the following natural supplements:  Beta carotene, Vitamin C, Vita E with selenium, Zinc, B vitamins, Magnesium and EPA and GLA (essential fatty acids).

Be sure to choose pure, natural supplements that are both money-back and quality guaranteed for optimal health.

According to research reported in The Journal of Clinical Allergy, those who took large amounts of EPA for 10 weeks had a 36.6% decrease in breathing difficulty.

The University of  Nottingham in England found that high dietary magnesium is associated with better lung function, including a reduced risk of both wheezing and over-reactions of the air passages leading to the lungs.

A review of the available research shows that there’s mounting evidence that Vitamin C may protect against the wheezing, chest tightness and recurrent coughing of asthma. -Dr. Gary E. Hatch, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Nutrition For Kids…Overview

It is my desire to help educate my readers in the area of health, by offering  info about nutrition for kids to help raise  healthier children.  By using even some of my recommended tips, many illnesses can be improved and/or eliminated.

It’s more important than ever to provide  kids with healthy diets and teach them good eating habits because it is well known that children across the country are getting sick in increasingly greater numbers from a variety of  illnesses.

They include: allergies, asthma, leukemia, obesity, and learning and behavioral disabilities.  Scientists are searching for answers and many feel that the toxins found in what kids eat, drink and breathe may be  putting them at risk.

NUTRITION FOR KIDS: DID YOU KNOW?

  • That 75% of brain capacity develops between birth and age 3?  By age 5, brain development is 90% complete.
  • Starting at age 2, children should eat moderately low-fat food to avoid health problems later.
  • Between 11 and 16, children often experience a major growth spurt.
  • Conclusion: It is never too early to get your child off to the right dietary start.

NUTRITION FOR KIDS…NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS

  • Excessive sweating                           Fatigue                                 Bed wetting
  • Recurring nose bleeds                      Allergies                               Headaches
  • Poor attention span                          Tongue spots                       Skin paleness
  • Recurring ear problems                   Persistent colds                  Wheezing
  • Dark circles under eyes                    Mouth breathing                Stomachaches
  • Poor school performance                 Twitching                            Diarrhea
  • Leg/muscle aches                              Stuffy nose                          Constipation
  • Chronic winter coughs                      Irritability                           Hyperactivity
  • Puffiness in face                                 Picky eater                                           B. Lagoni

In today’s busy families, we eat on the run, have little time to sit down as a family,  and generally don’t eat well when we do.

We are overly influenced by TV ads and programs, and it takes too much family time away from us.

Day care dependency – our children are fed, taught by, and learn from others who may or may not have the same standards as we do.

The American Dental Association’s study found that although parents think their kids are buying healthy lunches, only 36% of them do.  Instead they’re buying  fast food and vending machine snacks.  This practice certainly doesn’t add to the nutritional health for kids.

With the current financial situation,  in most families both parents work outside the home.  In addition to adding to causes of  stress, there is only so much that can get accomplished in a day,  so compromises must be made.

Do You:

  • Eat on the run?
  • Ever go to fast food restaurants?
  • Use nutrient-poor foods that replace balanced meals?
  • Enjoy nutritionally balanced and relaxed daily family meals?

4 FOOD GROUPS TODAY – THE “4 F’S”

  1. Fast – microwavable, pre-cooked, fast foods
  2. Frozen – not eating enough fresh foods
  3. Fatty – animal and saturated          Linda Rodriguez, M.D.
  4. Fake – ex. margarine…see: Pass the Butter

NUTRITION FOR KIDS…FOOD FACTS

  • Today’s food is different from that of a century ago.  It is:  over- processed; chemicals and preservatives are added;  soil is depleted of essential nutrients.
  • Altered fats create free radicals which damage cells
  • Meats & poultry are injected with hormones and antibiotics.  (This makes the animals larger and more disease free.) These drugs get transferred into our bodies when we eat them.  How healthy is that?
  • Early harvesting, transporting and storage of food reduces nutritional value
  • In two income families there is often little parental control of children’s daycare diets

Do these take away from the nutritional health for kids; do you see them as additional causes of stress?

All of the above nutrition for kids facts lead to the conclusion that our kids’ nutritional health is sadly lacking, and falls short of recommended standards:

U.S.D.A. reports that 85% of children eat fewer than the recommended five servings of fruit and vegetables daily.

Furthermore, most of the “vegetables”  come in the form of
potatoes (french fries) and tomatoes (ketchup.)

National dietary survey of children showed a substantial number have diets that fall short of critical nutrients such as:  iron, calcium, zinc, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E    B. Helms-Bot

The above food facts give situations that occur in many of our busy homes today.  Much of the time, kids healthy diets just don’t exist. To teach your kids healthy eating habits, simply select from the suggestions below and  use them daily.

NUTRITION FOR KIDS…HEALTHY EATING PLAN

  • Keep the diet as close to natural as possible
  • Eat a high quality protein with each meal
  • Whole grains like rolled oats, brown rice, whole grain pastas & breads
  • Cold pressed oils – olive or canola are best
  • Fresh fruits and veggies – organic when possible
  • Organic meats or those with no nitrites or nitrates
  • Stay away from artificial sweeteners
  • Avoid sugary sweets and refined salty snacks
  • Limit dairy, especially if prone to allergies or congestion
  • Select a common sense supplement program
  • Read ingredients – anything ending in “ose” is a sugar (ex. dextrose)
  • Exercise
  • Drink pure water
  • Get plenty of sleep

The above nutrition facts for kids when put into practice with your family, will help to raise the level of its health.

Therefore, if your child eats nourishing food and safe, natural supplements -  is active, and gets plenty of sleep – and is exposed only to non-toxic, natural,  green cleaning products, they will be sick much less of the time.  Just think how great it would be to have a happier, healthier and less stressed family!

How to Improve Your Child’s Behavior

That brings to mind, when my two younger children were of  pre-school age, we went out for lunch one day with another mom and her two kids.

She was absolutely shocked that mine so easily tried new foods, and wanted to know what my secret was.

I told her about my food rule: “try it…if you don’t like it, you don’t have to eat it, but you must taste it.”

Instead of  “I don’t like it,”  9 times out of 10 they would say, “this is good…can I have some more?”

Not only did I not have fussy eaters, but meal time had become much more pleasant.

More importantly, I knew that my kids were getting the nutrition for kids that kept them healthy.

Child Nutrition…How Well Are Your Kids?

Do your children:
* Get sick often?
* Have head or stomach aches?
* Have dark circles under the eyes?
* Have trouble waking up in the morning?
* Have mood swings & erratic behavior?
* Eat fewer fruits & vegetables than they should?
* Complain of growing pains?
* Experience learning challenges or poor concentration?
* Suffer from allergies, asthma or chronic ear infections?——

The above problems often stem from food choices. It is important for your child’s nutrition and their growing bodies to supply them with vital nutrients for optimal health.

Solutions: Healthy Eating For Kids

Eat a Rainbow-a colorful variety of natural fruits & vegetables for nourishment…organic is the healthiest because there are no pesticides, etc.
All supply different nutrients, so a variety is best.

Avoid Trans Fats-contained in snacks & desserts with hydrogenated fats, found in many of kids’ conventional processed foods. The process transforms vegetable oils into solid fats, rich in trans fatty acids. These acids have been shown to increase the risk of coronary heart disease and have a negative impact on cholesterol levels.

Cut Down on Refined Sugar-found to be the source of health problems such as obesity, diabetes and dental decay. Filling up on nutrient-poor, sugar rich foods can diminish the appetite, leaving less room for more wholesome foods.

Instead provide kids with fresh, seasonal fruits or dried fruit. Use unsweetened applesauce. Try unrefined sweeteners – maple syrup & honey. Cut back on fruit juice or add water to it.

Stay Away from White Foods-avoid white flour, white rice, etc. The nourishing nutrients have been removed. Instead use healthy whole grains and brown rice. The darker it is, the healthier it is.

Go Organic-pound for pound, children eat more fruits & veggies than adults and are thus exposed to higher levels of possible contaminants. Choose organic over conventional for good child nutrition.

Here’s a book I found that you can buy that is all about healthy raw snacks and treats-click

Healthy Snacks

Here’s more healthy munchies for kids: fresh or dried fruit, trail mix, granola, popcorn, crackers, nuts and seeds, nutrition bars.

Model Good Nutrition Choices – if you choose fries instead of baked potato, you can’t expect your children to do otherwise.

Discourage Habit of Watching TV While Eating-can lead to childhood and adult obesity.
For additional info, click: Obese Child

Read Ingredients-food colorings in kids food have a dramatic impact on behavior and attention span.

“Toss your Teflon cookware. It can cause many varieties of cancers.”

Child Nutrition-McDonalds Nutrition Facts

This post will explore child nutrition through McDonalds nutrition facts and how they are related.

It is based on the experiment done by Morgan Spurlock who made himself into a human guinea pig by eating 3 meals a day for 30 days exclusively at McDonalds, and made a documentary called “Supersize Me.”

One of the favorite things kids love to do is to eat at a McDonalds.

Because this fast food is cheap, tasty and quick, parents like it too in their fast paced, busy and stressed lives…and the kids get a free toy!

But it comes with a price… childhood obesity has soared.

It has increased over 50% in the last two decades.

*************************************************************

Fast Food Facts from Super Size Me

Morgan Spurlock’s goal was to explore the obesity epidemic which plagues America today,  so he made a video documentary,
Super Size Me showing his journey from fit to flab in 30 days.  He’s also traveled to 20 cities across the country interviewing people on the street, health experts, and a lobbyist for the fast food industry.

Upon starting McDonalds nutrition, Morgan Spurlock was a healthy 6’2″ 185 pound 33 year old.

After one month eating only from the McDonalds menu he had gained 30 pounds – but even more importantly, had become very ill.

Changes began as soon as a few days after starting when he was vomiting out of his car window,  and doctors after examining him were shocked to see the rapid deterioration of his entire body.

His liver had become toxic, his cholesterol had shot up from a low 165 to 230, his libido was down and he developed headaches and depression.

Throughout the month Morgan Spurlock was regularly examined by a cardiologist, a gastroenterologist,  and a general practitioner.

He was an extremely healthy person who got very sick eating this McDonalds diet.  None of us imagined he could deteriorate this badly-he looked terrible.  The liver test was the  most shocking thing – it became very, very abnormal.” – Daryl Isaacs,  M.D.

An interesting effect of  his eating solely from the McDonalds menu,  was that he even starting craving fat and sugar fixes between meals.

Spurlock said, “I got desperately ill.  My face was splotchy and I had this huge gut, which I’ve never had in my life.  My knees started to hurt from the extra weight coming on so quickly.  It was amazing and really frightening.”

His girlfriend, a vegan chef, was horrified but knew he wanted to educate people.

Spurlock has since returned to normal health. “The treatment was to just stop doing what he was doing.” Dr. Daryl Isaacs

Morgan Spurlock was never able to get through to anyone from McDonalds to agree to an interview.  A spokeswoman for McDonalds said that no representative from the corporation had seen Super Size Me.

She went on to say,

“Consumers can achieve balance in their daily dining decisions by choosing from our array of quality offerings and range of portion sizes to meet their taste and nutrition goals.”

Spurlock decided to do this experiment after eating a typical Thanksgiving meal.  Feeling bloated, he watched the news on TV and saw that 2 women were suing McDonalds.

People from the food industry were saying, “You can’t link kids being fat to our food – our food is nutritious.”

This made him wonder about McDonalds nutrition,  and he decided to find out.

Kids Nutrition-Childhood Obesity

This post will deal with facts about kids nutrition as it relates to childhood obesity,  plus  causes and prevention of what has become an epidemic.

By  eating out in fast food restaurants and consuming junk food at home and in school,  a huge number of kids today lack the nourishment their bodies require for healthy growth and development.

To see what happened to one man who lived solely on a diet of McDonalds food for one month, click:  McDonalds Nutrition Facts

Add to this,  inactivity from over-watching TV and being glued to electronic games, and we now are faced with a generation of kids  whose habits have led to the obese child now showing up in  epidemic proportions!

Those life style choices can lead to adult diseases such as hypertension and type 2 diabetes.

Previously only showing up in adults,  these illnesses are now being diagnosed in children!

Because of the health complications childhood obesity can cause, scientists predict that this generation of children will be the first to die at an earlier age than their parents!

Starting at a young age, kids can tell the difference between “fat” and “thin” people.  Even they realize that fat people tend to be less popular.

Studies show that overweight children ages 6 and older tend to have fewer friends, are less involved with extracurricular activities, are more depressed, and have lower self esteem than thinner kids.  It may also have an effect  on lifelong success or failure.

Because of the above facts about the obese child,  no one wants to be fat.  Thin is in…especially today.  TV and print constantly feature skinny models which forms society’s attitude about body weight.  Even young children are conscious about their weight.

Being overweight is unhealthy, but added to that, the loathing attached to body fat can lead to dangerous eating disorders such as anorexia.

Kids Nutrition-Childhood Obesity Stats

In the U.S. one child in four is overweight and this number continues to grow.  Over the last two decades, this number has increased by more than 50% and the number of extremely overweight children has nearly doubled.  (Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 1995: 149: 1085-91)

Kids Nutrition-Risks to the Obese Child

Kids have fewer weight-related health problems than adults, but overweight children are at high risk of becoming overweight adolescents and adults.

Overweight adults are at high risk for a number of health problems including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and some cancers.

Overweight children are at an increased risk of many immediate health disorders including kidney disease, hip and ankle problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, and inflammation of the pancreas. -Laura Muha

Additional risks to the obese child are that they are nearly twice as likely to grow up to be obese adults.  And a child who keeps the weight on through adolescence and into adulthood has a good chance of developing serious medical problems, according to Gerald Berenson, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Tulane University Medical School and a lead researcher of one of the longest-running studies on childhood obesity and heart disease.

“By the time they’re teens, many have the beginnings of heart disease or diabetes” – Gerald Berenson, M.D.

Other risks of childhood obesity include early puberty, common among both overweight boys and girls has been linked to breast cancer in women later in life.

And cancer of the ovaries, uterus, colon, rectum, and prostate are also more common in obese adults.

In addition, annual hospital costs associated with obesity-related diseases in children are soaring and continue to skyrocket.

Causes Relating to the Obese Child

The most common causes are overeating and/or unhealthy eating, lack of physical activity and genetic factors or a combination of these factors.

Rarely is a medical problem the cause. Genetic factors play a role in increasing the chances that a child will be overweight, but shared family behaviors such as eating and activity habits also influence body weight.

Both a child’s total diet and activity level play important roles in determining the cause for childhood obesity.  Today the popularity of  TV, the computer and video games all lead to their inactive lifestyles.

The average American child spends approximately 24 hours weekly watching television, so different from kids a generation ago where they were actively playing with friends outdoors.

Busy parents have less time to plan and prepare wholesome meals.  Added to this, there is the constant barrage of ads for processed, high fat, high-sugar junk foods which are quick, easy and they make them taste great.

When eating out, restaurants now serve oversized portions, adding another cause for childhood obesity.

If  you think your child is overweight, let his pediatrician determine it.

According to the Surgeon General, childhood obesity is the number one health concern.”
Dr. William Sears

Ways to Prevent Childhood Obesity

Here is a good-sized list of ways to prevent childhood obesity:

  • For families with overweight children, major changes must be made in Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude and Nutrition.  It has to be a family affair.
  • Set a no-gain goal: stay the same weight for 2 years-takes pressure off.
  • Never talk about “weight control or fat.” Ask what the child’s major change-wish is. If it’s to run faster & not get tired, explain that the extra weight is like carrying around a bunch of weights.  Have the child carry a 5 lb. bag of canned goods in each arm for a few minutes.
  • Teach your kid  about “grow foods” (fruits & vegetables, lowfat yogurt and fish. They’re free foods-eat all you want. They keep you running faster, make you strong, have pretty hair & skin.  (answer depends on the change the child wants to make.)
  • Non-grow foods (those that keep you from running fast) are packaged foods like french fries, pastries and sweetened drinks.
  • Have your child read labels to recognize the 2 bad words:  corn syrup and hydrogenated.  Overconsumption  of sweetened beverages seems to be the major contributor to childhood obesity.
  • Get children moving-have watching TV equal the amount of time spent at physical activity
  • Downsize food portions-serve small portions of nutritious food on the plate-no serving bowls. Also teach children to take smaller bites and chew them longer. This discourages overeating. Dr. William Sears-The Lean Kids’ Program
  • Be supportive-let your kid know he’s okay. Children need you to be supportive, accepting and encouraging.
  • Focus on family-don’t single out your overweight child.  Gradually change the family’s eating habits and physical activities.
  • Increase your family’s physical activity: be a role model for your kid.  What you do, they copy.  Help your child find physical activities that they enjoy and that aren’t embarrassing or too difficult.
  • Teach your family healthy eating habits. Offer kids healthy options, allowing them to choose what and how much they eat.
  • DON’T place your child on a restrictive diet unless a doctor supervises one for health reasons.
  • Guide family choices rather than dictate foods-have a wide variety of healthful foods available in your home
  • Eat meals together as a family as often as possible
  • Involve children in food shopping and meal preparation
  • Plan for snacks at specific times that are part of a nutritious diet.
  • Discourage eating meals or snacks while watching TV
  • Do not use food as a reward or punishment
  • Check that your child’s meals outside the home are balanced.  Learn more about the school lunch program
  • To reduce the weight in the large kids in your family,  set a good example by eating a variety of healthy foods and being physically active; your kids will learn healthy lifestyle habits they can follow the rest of their lives.

These are only some of the many ways to boost kids nutrition and prevent childhood obesity.  I’m sure you can come up with more solutions, and put into place, we can reduce such future facts about the obese child.

Healthy Eating for Kids

For your children to be as fit as possible, you may want to check out the following tips about healthy eating for kids.

We all want our kids to eat healthy food, but that doesn’t always happen even with the best of efforts on our part.

If you feel this to be the case in your family, one thing you might want to do  is turn to supplements for that added security.

Even the American Medical Association offers  tips for healthy kids.  They recommend daily multivitamins to be taken as  “insurance” for kids to be healthy.  In this way they’ll  have the necessary nutrients their bodies need.

There are many choices on the market, but be wise and choose a brand that is wholesome – not containing sugars (anything ending in “ose” like dextrose), or artificial colors or flavors.

GOOD NUTRITION

…Essential Vitamins

  • Vitamin A is essential for growth, development and a healthy immune system
  • B Vitamins (8 essential ones) are necessary for energy, brain function and stress management – especially good for people who eat processed foods and refined carbs.
  • Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant  and is essential for brain and immune function as well as healthy skin
  • Vitamin D is crucial in bone development, and not enough can limit growth.  Especially important for those not getting enough sunshine

…Omega 3 Fatty Acids for Children

Another tip for kids and good nutrition is essential fatty acids, especially the omega 3s. Omega 3 fatty acids for children are essential for their development and health of the brain, heart, nervous system, tissues, skin and immune system. DHA, is  an extremely important Omega 3 fatty acid for children of school age Consider supplementing if the following DHA foods are missing from your family’s diet:  cold water fish (salmon and tuna), flax seed, dark leafy greens and walnuts.

…Eat A Rainbow

It’s best to daily eat foods of a variety of  colors to get the nourishment essential for the proper nutrition and wellness for kids.  Select natural foods that are purple, blue, red, orange, yellow or green in color.

Choose fruits and vegetables that are a variety of colors

AVOID TRANS  FATTY ACIDS

Eliminate snacks and desserts with hydrogenated fats…these are added to many processed foods aimed at kids.  The hydrogenation process changes vegetable oils into solid fats which are rich in trans fatty acids. Studies have shown that trans fatty acids increase the risk of coronary heart disease because they raise the bad cholesterol (LDL) levels and decrease the good (HDL). One of the best ways to select healthy foods is to read the ingredients!

ABOUT REFINED SUGAR

Eating high intakes of refined sugar can be at the bottom of many health problems and risks such as obesity, diabetes and tooth decay.  It can also limit the desire for more nutritious foods. There are many healthy foods that are high in nutrients but lower in sugar.

  • Substitute refined sugar sweets for more wholesome, healthy treats such as fresh or dried fruits, unsweetened applesauce and granola as toppings.
  • Dilute 100% fruit juices with pure water.
  • There are healthy alternative sweeteners for baking – maple syrup, molasses, honey and agave nectar.
  • Again, read ingredients.

THE GLYCEMIC INDEX

This points to the speed a carbohydrate is digested, enters the bloodstream, and raises the blood sugar levels.

The danger of high glycemic foods like refined flours and high sugar drinks, is that they are quickly digested which causes a rapid spike in blood sugar and insulin levels.  Effects like these have been linked to overeating, obesity and diabetes.

On the other hand, foods on the low glycemic index foods list offer more stabilized  blood sugar levels, have proven to decrease cholesterol levels and have lowered the risk of diabetes.

So the importance of switching high glycemic index foods for ones on the low glycemic index foods list is obvious.  When followed, blood sugar levels will be balanced and healthy eating habits will be established.

On the low glycemic index foods list, foods are generally high in fiber and protein and are more filling.  Foods with the lowest glycemic index include beans, dairy products, fruits & vegetables and whole grains which would be excellent healthy eating for kids to keep them on the right track. Low GI foods satisfy your hunger,  increase your energy levels, and eliminate your desire to eat more than you should.

GLUTEN

Some kids (and adults) have a sensitivity to gluten.  In severe forms they may have celiac disease which is an intestinal autoimmune disorder that is usually inherited.

If a person has celiac disease, they must stay on a gluten-free diet permanently, because there is no cure for it.

Gluten is mainly found in wheat, rye and barley. Most flours and breakfast cereals have gluten in them. Flours are commonly used in baking to help the dough stick together.

Oats are still a question…not enough research has been done as yet.

Gluten is sometimes used in some pretty unexpected ways, as a thickener or a stabilizing agent in products like ketchup and ice-cream.

Some vitamins and medication as well as alcohol, lipstick, lip gloss and lip balms may also contain gluten and need to be investigated before use.

Here is a good gluten-free recipe book for kids that contains recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks – click:

Swine Flu Symptoms in Children

101433266c H1N1 Swine Flu is currently spreading throughout the U.S. and the world and swine flu symptoms in children are soaring. In the U.S. this disease appears to have taken a more mild form, and those infected for the most part, have quickly recovered.

Swine Flu Symptoms

Swine flu symptoms are like those of regular flu symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue. Some also have diarrhea and vomiting. These symptoms can be caused by any number of illnesses, and the only way swine flu can be diagnosed is by your doctor ordering lab tests.

Swine Flu Symptoms in Children

  • Not drinking enough fluids
  • Not waking up or interacting
  • Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
  • Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
  • Fever with a rash

Adult Emergency Warning Signs:

…urgent medical attention required

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
  • Sudden dizziness

Swine Flu Symptoms in Children-FAQs:

What is Swine Flu?
In the past, there were rare cases of humans becoming affected from pigs who had swine flu, and those who were affected, had direct contact with pigs. But the current H1N1 swine flu outbreak is different. This is a new swine flu virus that is spreading from one individual to another…and these people have had no contact with pigs.

How is Swine Flu Transmitted?

The new H1N1 swine flu virus spreads just like the regular flu. It travels mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of the infected person, or by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. This virus can become airborne if the infected person coughs or sneezes without covering their nose or mouth, sending the germs into the air.

*************************************************

When is a Person Contagious?

Infected people are contagious beginning 1 day before swine flu symptoms develop and up to 7 more days after becoming ill. This means you can pass on the flu to another person before you know you’re sick as well as while you’re ill.

Will Eating/Preparing Pork Cause Swine Flu?

No, swine influenza viruses are not spread by food. Eating properly prepared pork products is safe.

TODAY’S HEALTH BOOSTING TIPS

**********************************************************************

How to Prevent Swine Flu-Children

  • Wash hands often or use an alcohol based hand cleaner
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. That’s how germs spread
  • Avoid close contact with sick people
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw tissue in trash after use.
  • Try to stay in good general health
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Be physically active
  • Manage stress
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Eat nutritious food

With the current concern about Swine Flu, the most important thing you can do to protect your health is to build a strong immune system. That is key. Dr. Steven Chaney, head of the nutrition department at University of North Carolina Medical School recommends a simple program that strengthens the immune system – a very good idea when these super bugs like the Swine Flu are being reported and swine flu symptoms in children are soaring. He believes it is especially important to use vitamin products that you know are well absorbed and utilized by the body.
