CHILDREN HOME SAFETY…DANGERS of HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS

CHILDRENS HOME SAFETY…HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT’S LURKING UNDER YOUR SINK?

Childrens Home Safety – How Many of  These  Toxic Household Cleaners

Do You Use in Your Home?

We all want to keep our kids as safe as possible because they are so precious to us. A major way to provide for your childrens home safety is  to have an environment for children that is as toxic–free as possible .

So, it’s necessary to take a look at our household cleaners:

Recent studies indicate dozens of toxic chemicals are showing up in the bloodstreams of American children.

Some can be traced to household cleaning products and others to pesticides and preservatives from non-organic food.

A Canadian study found that women who work at home have a 54% higher death rate from cancer than those who work away from home.  The study concluded that this was a direct result of the increased exposure to toxic chemicals, many that are found in common household cleaners.

Do you know that poisoning occurs very often in homes where parents are unaware that those cleaning products they use are toxic?

Isn’t that ironic…parents who are doing their best to give their kids a healthy, clean home could instead be poisoning them!

The most frequent calls to poison centers are from frightened parents whose kids have gotten into toxic household cleaners such as: carpet cleaners, chlorine bleach, degreasers, drain cleaners, glass cleaners, mold and mildew removers, oven cleaners, scouring cleansers, toilet bowl cleaners, and tub and tile cleaners.

As a result, problems affecting kids can range from cancer and even death, to damage of skin, mouth, eyes, throat, and more.  Internal organs can also be injured.

The government acknowledges that these household cleaners are hazardous, but regulation only requires that labels indicate if they are combustible, corrosive, poisonous, use caution, etc.

It seems to me that they could be doing a great deal more to alert an unsuspecting and uninformed public.

Think about it this way…babies crawl on the floors you’ve cleaned and then what do they generally do?Babies constantly crawl on floors to get around. Then they put their hands into their mouths...are your floors chemically cleaned? They put their hands into their mouths and all those toxins go right into their bloodstreams.  How about that danger!

Also, are you aware that allergies and asthma are at an all time high?  A major reason may be that most detergents and softeners also contain toxins.

Children lay all night in pajamas and sheets washed in these toxic products.  The chemicals are absorbed by the skin and enter the bloodstream  and work the same way the drugs in the nicotine patch or the estrogen patch do.

Okay, enough said…here are some helpful tips to turn this danger to kids’ health around…

CHILDRENS HOME SAFETY… GENERAL INFO FROM THE EPA -  An EPA publication lists 34 tips in 8 areas.  A few of them are listed below:

1. Help children breathe easier – Don’t smoke at home; keep the home clean (reduce dust, mold, pet dander, etc.); avoid open burning

2. Protect children from lead poisoning - Have children tested for lead; wash children’s hands before they eat -  run the cold water for at least 30 seconds to flush lead from pipes – check older homes for lead in the paint

3. Keep pesticides and other toxic chemicals away from children – Read product labels and follow directions.

Store pesticides and chemicals in a safe place to protect your kids health.

Wash fruits and vegetables under running water before eating – peel them before eating when possible.

I would add that just washing produce under water has little effect. Use a natural household cleaner made for this purpose and rinse thoroughly.

In a different document, the EPA recognizes the importance of organic fruit and vegetables – no pesticides.

4. Protect children from carbon monoxide poisoning - Check fuel burning appliances, furnace fumes, and chimneys annually; install CO alarms in sleeping areas

5. Protect children from contaminated fish and polluted water –

Be alert for local fish advisories and beach closings

Learn what’s in your drinking water – Think about getting a water purifier.

6. Safeguard children from high levels of radon – have your home tested.

7. Protect Children from too much sun – Wear hats, sunglasses, protective clothing; Use SPF15+ sunscreen & keep infants out of direct sunlight

8. Keep children and mercury apart – Eat a balanced diet but avoid fish with high levels of mercury, such as tuna and swordfish…

Buy wild caught fish, not farm raised – that can contain bacteria.

Replace mercury thermometers with a digital thermometer

Setting even some of the above child home safety standards in your home will help keep your kids safe and well.

Childrens Home Safety…Today’s Health Boosting Tip:*

Did you know that real clean, doesn’t smell like pine trees or bleach? In fact, it doesn’t smell like anything at all.

Really clean is odorless!

*Go find green household cleaners that work well, are cost saving because they are so concentrated, and are safe for you, your family and the environment.

Note: because they are so concentrated, you’ll be able to cut back on the amount of natural household cleaners you purchase.  So, go green and save money.  This  will at the same time, greatly help to reduce the vast number of pollution causing containers that go into landfills.

If you choose to follow even some of these suggestions about safety at home, it will be a win all around – for a healthier you, your family and our planet.

HOME SAFETY SECURITY – MY KID GOT SHOCKED!

My kid got shocked…don’t let it happen to yours!
How secure are you about your child's home safety...have you childproofed your home?Talk about home safety and security…many years ago I walked in on my toddler sticking his finger into an electrical outlet (which scared me big time).

But never mind my reaction, he got shocked from it and started screaming.

Fortunately, he wasn’t harmed, and as you can guess, he never tried that again.

So, to prevent your curious kids from having that same potentially dangerous experience, install plastic protectors (made for that purpose) into all your unused electrical outlets.

Home safety security should be important to everyone, whether you live in your own home or an apartment.  Knowing your home is protected gives peace of mind…one less thing for you to worry about.

To protect your family and home there are choices.  One way to go is an expensive alarm system, but know there are measures you can take that will make your home safer that won’t cost you a small fortune.  For example, organize a neighborhood watch.

Also, if someone in your family is almost always at home, you could be at less of a risk than for example, another person who lives alone and is often away on business.  Motion detector lights would be a help here to discourage intruders.

  • A wise thing to write down is an accident prevention and a fire safety plan.  These preventive measures can rule out a lot of heartache, expense, loss and stress.
  • Another home safety security measure to take for your little ones is to install safety locks on cabinets & drawers, and safety gates to prevent them from tumbling down flights of stairs.
  • Install smoke alarms and a carbon monoxide detector.
  • Also, install window stops and window guards.
  • Place all emergency numbers by every phone. Include the
    Poison Control Center’s number: 1-800-222-1222.
  • Learn first aid and CPR.
  • Avoid using alcohol based germicides.  Firemen can point out those areas in your home sprayed with it.  It burns much faster and more thoroughly than those areas where it’s not been used.

In addition, potential dangers from toxic household cleaners to the whole family are: carpet cleaners, chlorine bleach, degreasers, drain cleaners, glass cleaners, mold and mildew removers, oven cleaners, scouring cleansers, toilet bowl cleaners, and tub and tile cleaners.

They range with harmful effects from causing cancer to causing harsh injuries to eyes, skin, mouth, stomach, liver, respiratory system and more.

Consider removing these types of products from your home and Go Green!

You will provide additional home safety security and as a result have greater peace of mind.
