HOME FIRE SAFETY – TEACHING KIDS FIRE PROTECTION

Although kids may be scared to think about a fire breaking out in their home, it’s an excellent idea to discuss home fire safety with them.
If know what to do  they know what to do in advance, it may save their lives.

Have you taught your kids what to do in case of fire? The whole family should sit down together and talk about what to do to safely escape a fire that’s started at home.

Escape plans and escape routes are  important for each family member to know.  The goal is to get outside quickly and safely.

Because a fire’s smoke can make it hard to see, it’s important for all to learn all the different exits in their home, and how to get to them from their bedrooms.

  • To further teach kids about home fire safety, you must explain about not opening their bedroom doors if smoke or heat are present.
–Talk about escape from their windows and collapsible ladders, or having an adult present to help.
–Teach them how to unlock windows and remove screeens, but stress this is only for emergencies.
  • Choose a meeting place in the yard or at a neighbor’s house.
  • Practice a fire drill twice a year.
  • Change batteries in smoke detectors yearly.
  • If caught in smoke-filled room, drop to the floor and crawl to exit so you don’t breathe in the unhealthy  smoke.
  • If clothes catch on fire, DON’T RUN!  Instead, stop, drop and roll out the flames.
  • If fire blocks the door, teach the child to yell from an open window or if available, use a phone to call 911.
  • Stress never to go back into a burning house for a pet or toy…instead tell a fireman about it.
  • Keep bedroom doors closed at night.
  • Keep a flashlight by the bed.
  • Never try to put out a fire by yourself, no matter how small it is.
  • Never play with matches or lighters.

Some parents may want to avoid the teaching the subject of home fire safety with their kids because they feel the children will be frightened.  My feelings are if you approach this topic gently and without fear, your kids will be armed with the knowledge that just may save their lives!

ELECTRICAL SAFETY in the HOME – TEACH YOUR KIDS

Is your home in good condition…how does electrical safety in the home rate at your house?

Did You Know?
Electricity related incidents in the home annually cause approximately:

  • 300 electrocutions
  • 12,000 shock and burn injuries
  • 150,000 fires…from NSC, CPSC, AND OSH

There are two kinds of home fire safety risks:

  1. Risk of electrical shock
  2. Risk of electrical faults causing fire

Make your kids aware of the various areas of possible electrical problems in the home.
Here are some tips you can follow:

  • Teach your kids to NEVER put fingers or objects into electrical outlets, toasters, or any other appliance EVEN IF IT’S TURNED OFF!Protect your kids from getting shocks or worse. Cover unused outlets with child safety outlet covers.
I neglected to do this and my son got shocked!
  • Keep appliances and cords away from kids, bathtubs and sinks.
  • Use plug covers on unused outlets.
  • Because electricity can travel down the strings on kites and balloons, have kids play with them only in open areas away from electrical wires, because they can cause shock or fire.
  • Teach children to recognize “Danger High Voltage” signs and stay away from power lines, sub-stations and pad-mounted transformers.
  • Don’t let kids climb trees near power lines.

To be sure that home builders have followed the best procedures with electrical installations, and that these are not later out of date, it would be a good idea to follow the practices of Asian countries.  There they run periodic inspections and give mandatory certificates to home owners.

In the U.S., certification of new developments are not enough because aging homes, or those built before 1973, don’t meet the current electrical demands of today’s world.

It is highly recommended to update or repair the electrical wiring in these older homes.
A few of the modern improvements to the electrical systems of homes are to:

  • Install contemporary circuit breakers that are made to automatically shut off when they detect a fire.Be sure to cover unused outlets with child protective outlet covers.
  • Consider tamper resistant outlets to protect small children from getting shocked or worse, electrocuted.
  • Indoor and outdoor wiring has specific building codes…make sure they are followed for maximum safety.

So by making some simple changes, and by teaching your kids about electrical safety in the home, you might be saving lives or in the very least, helping to prevent accidents and injuries.

SAFETY AT HOME – ARE YOUR KIDS REALLY SAFE?

Do you ever wonder if your kids are really safe at home…is there more that you can do to protect them?

In my previous Safety at Home posts, I have listed many potential dangers that you as parents can remove from your home to prevent accidents before they happen.

This post will deal with a variety of additional possible dangers to the health and safety of your kids…read below to more fully to discover kids safety tips you may not have thought of.

  • If you have a fireplace, space heater, etc. put barriers around it to prevent your kids from being burned.
  • Have syrup of Ipecac handy for accidental poisonings, but be sure to call your physician or poison control center before using it.
  • Be sure that plastic bags, broken toy pieces, screws and other potential choking hazards are thrown away or put in an area children can’t get to.
  • Have all indoor and outdoor stairways and entrances well lit and not obstructed.
  • Be sure all bathrooms and bedrooms can be unlocked from the outside.
  • Keep matches and lighters away from children’s reach.
  • Keep at least two exits clear in case of fire or other emergency.
  • Check all electrical cords for cracks and fraying.

Be sure that all outlets and extension cords are not overloaded.

  • It is best not to use space heaters.  If they are used, make sure they are in safe condition.  Never plug them into an extension cord.  Do not place them near drapes or furnishings.
  • Do not use the stove/oven as a heater.
  • Wallpaper and paint should not be chipping or peeling.
  • Keep purses, backpacks, etc. out of children’s reach because they may contain medicines, hard candies or other items that can harm kids.

It is always wise to call for help whenever you’re uncomfortable with a medical situation.
For Emergencies, Call 911

If you follow the above items and some of those in my other posts, you won’t have to wonder about safety at home or…are your kids really safe.  You’ll have that peace of mind knowing you took precautions for their protection.

Home Safety Products: Kids…SO, DO THESE CLEANERS REALLY WORK?

Hi…This post is all about home safety products that help protect kids health.

Here’s what happened to me-check it out, then you decide if these cleaners
are effective:

Today I’m going to tell you a true story that happened to me a long time ago…
it’s been more than 29 years that I started my journey to help parents
raise
healthier kids.

On one of those early days, I was practicing a cleaning demo in
my brand new home so that I would feel confident presenting  it
to a  group of parents.

As I was holding a bottle of iodine (you know how that stains) in
the just-built white bathroom to do a demo that shows how the whitening laundry product I use does so well with removing stains…

Did you guess…I dropped the iodine – it hit the sink and promptly
spilled everywhere!

All over the white patterned vinyl wallpaper, white ceramic tile, grout…
dark brown was splattered all over my new white bathroom  :(

Fortunately, my office was the room on the other side of the wall, so after
I got over the shock, I ran, got all my home safety products together and went to work.

When I got done…(in short order,) I looked around and was thrilled
to see every single spot and stain was gone – all but 1/8th inch
of grout that I got to cleaning last (I should have done it first
before it had a chance to absorb).

I was so excited I called my upline and told him, “Mike, my home
safety products work, they really work!”

The bathroom looked brand new again and was I ever a happy camper!

So what do you think about my tale of woe that ended on a very happy note?

Be well,
Sarah

HOME SAFETY TIPS: Kids…GREEN TIPS

Here are some home safety tips for kids, and they’re green tips!

While reading through Sloan’s informative book, Green Goes With Everything,
I came across this info that I thought would be helpful to you…so here it is:

1. Gather all of your cleaning products and read the labels.

2. Notice how dangerous and toxic they are. Then, take a deep
breath (but not near the cleaning products). To protect your kids, get rid of any household cleaner that says, "Poison" or "Danger" and replace with safe, green cleaner.

3. Take all the ones that say “Danger,” “Poison,” or contain
chlorine bleach and ammonia and put them in a garbage bag.

4. Call your local sanitation department and ask them how to
dispose of them safely.

5. Buy green cleaning products and breathe deeply and safely.”

I highly recommend “Green Goes With Everything:  Simple Steps To
A Healthier Life And A Cleaner Planet” by Sloan Barnett.

She writes in an easy to read, personalized style and has done a
very thorough job which will help all to raise healthier kids, pets,
and live on a cleaner planet.  Her book is filled with kids’ home safety tips.

It’s so important and easy to make your home a healthier environment for your family…all you have to do is switch brands of the toxic cleaners you now use to green ones.
